F.J Ratchford History

Our journey began in 1889

Since our foundation in Manchester in 1889 by Frederick John Ratchford (pictured left), we we have supplied the finest materials which have covered many great works and lesser known volumes, with the same detailed attention to quality and craftsmanship.

During those early days FJ Ratchford began supplying materials for the shoe linings and hat industries which was big business during the end of the 19th century with Stockport being a front runner in hat manufacturing, and a museum in Stockport is a tribute to those days of old.

It was found over time that some of the shoe lining products could be adapted, and this is where the link to books and packaging materials began.
When Frederick John Ratchford died, his wife Hannah (pictured centre) ran the business until her son’s Edgar and Norman were old enough to take over the running of the business. Without her hard work we would not be here today! One of her sons, Norman married Winnifred (pictured top right with their son John N.S and Mr. Glynn Hughes who worked within the company from an early age, and they are accompanied by Fudge the soft guard dog.

Today we are a thriving family business run by Jonathan & Mr. John Ratchford, and Mrs.Doreen Ferguson who continue to take the same business ethos forward, by combining the same high quality products with the same personal touch worldwide.

Marcus is the newest family member (pictured centre) who started with the company back in 2017. Three generations of Ratchford’s sharing a joke. John, Marcus and Jonathan Ratchford Jan 2014.
